Cusco is a city sitting 3.400m above sea level. This is very very high. As a result the oxygen in the atmosphere is less. This means that whatever you try to do takes a lot of effort and you get tired very easily. And as if the fact of having less oxygen in the air was not enough, the place is full of uphills and downhills and the roads full of very very old cars and buses which emit tons of black CO2! The situation with the oxygen over there is so bad that I even the pigeons find it hard to fly and prefer to walk rather than fly!

They say that if you are going to Machu Pichu, you should stay for a couple of nights at Cusco first in order to acclimatize, get used to the climate. Some people even throw up and feel dizzy and stuff. Fortunately was feeling fine. Only way it affected me was that I was feeling tired and sleepy and slept a lot the first few days.

Other than that Cusco is a very very beautiful colonial city! One of the most beautiful I have ever visited. It is full of beautiful buildings and architecture.

It makes you wonder… at least it made me. After visiting so many colonial cities in South America, it amazed me what beautiful things the Spanish and Portuguese left behind. Places of such beauty that even having nothing much to offer, they are a big touristic place. And then I come to think… what did the English leave behind in Cyprus in terms of architecture? The presidential palace and the English School which are just buildings with sand and with no much character.

Cusco is a UNESCO World heritage site. I do not think the Presidential buildings or The English School ones will ever be!

Cusco was the capital of the Incas empire. It is full of indigenous people, a lot of whom speak their language which is Quechua, the language of the Incas. My impression was that Cusco was a small town with not much other than just being a stop-over for Machu Picchu. But is quite big, with its own airport and with many things to do, in and around the city.
