Goblins and witches

Wernigerode is also a charming town, punctuated by the imposing castle situated on a hill overlooking the town. We hiked up to the tallest mountain in the National Park, Mt Broken, through some dark and spooky forest where one could easily imagine some 'evil witch' might dwell. We did hear some strange growling from the forest. Possibly one of the resident lynxes, more likely a goblin though. Being much too far to walk down again ;-) we caught an old steam train back around the ranges.
We also visited the historic town of Quedlinburg, with its old castles, churches and more of those blasted cobblestone streets. We were a little disapointed to find some of the town cordoned off for the filming of a movie mixing the stories of Snow White and Hansel and Gretel, described by one staff member as "a bit crazy" as he twirled his finger around his ear.
