Where I stayed
Arrived at 3:00 p.m. and caught the BART (their railway) into central San Francisco only 8 bucks instead of 45 in a taxi. Booked into the Holiday Inn, two minutes walk from Fisherman's Wharf. Opened my case to find a note saying it had been searched by the Transport Security Administration, bloody cheek! They even opened the padlock without busting it, but I suppose they have keys to fit every type of lock. Made use of the hotels laundromat, I've been on my travels for 10 days so had lots of dirty stuff. Went down the wharf and had a sea-food platter for dinner (Kate would have loved it). Snapper, calamari, prawns, crab the lot! Very tasty. Went back to the hotel and did the ironing, whilst watching the tele, just like being at home!

Dull, misty and raining and only 11degs C
Still pouring with rain as I made my way down to pier 33 to catch the ferry across to Alcatraz. It took about 30 minutes to get across the bay. I took the audio tour round the island. It was very good and was narrated by some of the last prison officers to work there when it closed in 1963. Back to the hotel for a quick wash and brush up and out to dinner at O'Flanagan's Irish bar!
Had the chicken Caesar salad washed down with a pint of Smithwicks.
Monday 18th Jan 2010
What a horrible day in San Francisco, pouring down and only 11degs C. I've had to put the a/c on heat! Oh well not to worry, went down the gym for a CV workout before a good hearty breakfast
Rain has eased off so I donned my waterproof and ventured out. It was gusting gale force so I binned the idea of walking across the bridge and back. Instead I did a three mile loop from Fisherman's Wharf through Fort Mason Park and Pacific Heights and back to the hotel. Everywhere you go in San Francisco seems to be up hill! In the evening I had a walk up the road to an area called little Italy and had a nice spaghetti bolognaise for dinner.

Yet another early start. Up at 5 a.m. The hotel didn’t like the idea of me paying my bill with cash, asked me to pay with a card, I said no as I wanted to use up some dollars. (Plastic culture – we won’t have real money one day). Anyway I stood my ground and they relented so I had great pleasure in paying with lots of small bills and loose change that I had accumulated
Extract from the "San Francisco Chronicle" Tuesday January 19, 2010:
Rain (1.37inches), hail, thunder and stiff gusts of wind paraded through the Bay area on Monday, knocking out power to thousands of people and forcing an airliner into an emergency landing - and that was just a taste of what's to come!
It’s still pouring down, with some thunder and lightning thrown in for good measure! Anyway the plane took off on time, cruising at 38,000ft – it’s nice and sunny up here! The Bucks Fizz is good too! Had a flower on my tray… does the stewardess fancy me? Then I notice everybody has one… Well I can dream… See you all in Honolulu.
