Where I stayed
Arrived in Grand Cayman at 1830. It had been raining and felt quite humid. Made my way to the Budget Car desk expecting to be palmed off with another old banger. The guy behind the desk said he would do me an upgrade for an extra $5 a day to a SVR. I said yes, what the hell, I'm on holiday, and was presented with this Hyundai Tuscan which only had 250 miles on the clock and I was only the second person to rent it.
The Comfort Suites Hotel was quite nice and had a few more amenities, but wasn't all inclusive and only served a continental breakfast.
Had a meal and a couple of beers over the road at a place called Coconut Joe's. Sat outside which was a mistake as I got bit 3 times by the dreaded mosquitoes. Should have used Kate's wipes
Sunday 10th Jan 2010
Explored Georgetown in the morning, everywhere closed because its Sunday! The locals are very religious and put on their Sunday best and go to church. All the church car parks were full... and there are lots of them.
Did seven mile beach and the northern end of the island. Very windy and waves crashing on the rocks. Had my evening meal of Cayman chicken, rice and salad at the Hotel outside bar, washed down by a couple of pints of Caybrew beer. Remembered to use the anti mossie wipes! After I sat at the bar and watched an NFL football game between the Green Bay Packers and Arizona with some yank trying to explain the rules.
Monday 11th Jan 2010
Went to the supermarket and bought some soup and rolls for lunch (microwave in the room)
Returned to Georgetown, everywhere now open and found the post office and bought stamps and posted the postcards. I'll most probably be home by the time you get them!
Drove up the east end of the island. Nice big mansions with their own private beaches, if only I had a couple of million to spare I wouldn't be coming home!
Tuesday 12th Jan 2010
Chilled out by the pool until checkout time of noon. Returned the hire car and checked in. No First class lounge at the airport. Guess what... yes the flight was delayed by an hour due to technical problems. Luckily I had plenty of time in hand at Miami to catch my connecting flight to Las Vegas.
Headed to the First class lounge at Miami, very nice but you only got two drink tickets and if you wanted something to eat you had to pay for it. Flight to Las Vegas delayed by 20 minutes, getting better. Meal on-board was a cheeseburger! washed down with a couple of rum and cokes. I won't complain about BA again. Got to the Stratosphere hotel at midnight after crossing another two time zones.
