To Hinchinbrook Island

A three hour bus journey south took us to Cardwell which we left the following morning for the wilderness that is Hinchinbrook Island. A two hour fast ferry journey across a crystal clear blue sea (not a bad way to spend a Monday morning) took us to the start of the Thorsborne trail which we followed for the next four days with three nights under canvas. The 32 kilometre trail follws a narrow sparsely marked path traversing the east coast of the island through dense tropical rainforest to a series of golden beaches. The going wasn't too hard, if a little too hot for our tastes (even the locals thoght it was hot) and we generally finished walking by early afternoon. Hazards include esturine crocodiles in the creeks and you cant swim in the sea because of the deadly box jellyfish (we didn't see either fortunately.) We heard wildlife rather that saw it due to the density of the forest but there was some lizards about three feet long, a dugong floating in the sea (sort of a manatee type thing), lots of unusual birds and much scurrying in the darkness when the sun set at 6.30 in the evening (ravenous bush rats apparently - metal boxes are provided for the storage of your food). We were befreinded by a group of sixty year old Aussie ladies, so Theresa had someone to talk to. Most of them were on their first backpacking trip and were carrying packs twice the size of ours - they breed them tough out here.
We finished the trail on Thursday morning and another ferry took us back to the mainland for the transfer back to the Kookaboora Holiday Pary in Cardwell where we were treated to an Aussie barbecue with the locals, most of them fanatical fisherman.
Next day, back to Cairns. More thumbnails ...
