La Paz... the highest capital city in the world!!!
The approach to La Paz is spectacular, you are surrounded by snow capped mountains. then suddenly a valley appears and there, sitting in a huge bowl is the city of La Paz.
Now its time for a little travel tip for those who are interested!
When going to a big massive capital city... book your accommodation in advance!!!!
We didn´t have the time, due to the aforementioned bugs of the bed, to book ours. We picked a place to go to out of the Holy Planet Guidebook and got a taxi there. It was rank!! Move on... another taxi to another place... booked out... as were the next 5 (no exaggeration) places that we attempted to find lodging... Mary and Joseph... we can empathise!! Eventually we found a place to stay... but that after strugglin up and down hills... with our backpacks tearing the spines off us!!! Painful!!!
We spent 8 days in the city, of which... 7 and half were spent shopping, the other half day was spent in the post office, sending the stuff home!! The hotel that we stayed in was right next door to the city´s witchcraft market! They had all kinds of stuff for sale... seriously... they had dried llama foetuses, stuffed armadillos, peacocks feathers and other wierd, wierd items... all for luck, money, love and all sorts of human ailments!!!
We were in La Paz on Labour Day... 1st May. They had massive celebrations, loads of people dancin about, drinking and shouting slogans about "Viva Che, Viva Fidel, Viva Hugo and Viva Evo" (for those not up with the politics of the area... ye all know Che Guevara and Mr. F. Castro, the other two chaps are Mr. Hugo Chavez (President of Venezuala) and Mr. Evo Morales (President of Bolivia). All in all it was good fun!!
That was the extent of the time in La Paz..... a city that we really did like, apart from all the hills... we felt like mountaineers at some stages!
Next up... the awesome Bolivian Salt Flats and some amazing pictures!!!
