After spending an entire day in transit, we finally landed in Singapore on Tuesday, April 12 at 12:30pm (Tuesday 12:30am - Toronto time). It was exhausting but Cathay Pacific made the flights as comfortable as possible. The staff are friendly, with great attention to customer service and details. They provide you with pillows, blankets, a toiletry bag filled with toothbrush/paste, socks, and other "niceties" that you don't normally expect from most airlines (i.e. a menu card describing the meals they will be serving). Allan, we took an A340-300 from Toronto to Hong Kong and a 777-300 from Hong Kong to Singapore:)
When we arrived at the Singapore airport, we noticed armed guards wandering about. Pretty intimidating, but apparently this is quite "normal" (according to our guide). We were driven to our boutique-style hotel, Hotel 1929 in Chinatown and were surprised to see our tiny little room with its glassed washroom (it can't be bigger than 10x10). The entire washroom is tiled, with the shower head located above the toilet! It's so weird...
After taking a short nap, we wandered around Chinatown and had dinner at one of the food courts/hawker centres. We were surprised to see a food safety rating system in which restaurants had to post their letter grade! Smith Street (in Chinatown) was bustling with activity; with its street vendors and "pushy" salespeople, amazing smells and not-so-amazing smells, and wannabe cirque du soleil street performers. So much fun!
