People Profiles

Intriguing, Thought Provoking, Memorable, Inspiring Interesting Audacious, Great Characters; this is our first blog segment dedicated solely to exceptional people we meet while traveling.

Drew and Caroline from the USA – No Fear!

Caroline is a 24 year old artist and writer from Holmes County Ohio. (Yep! Amish territory)

Drew is a dread locked, minister's son, about the same age as wife Caroline, travel hacker, and entrepreneur. Drew works hard at collecting hotel and airline loyalty points and uses them to travel. He shares his experiences and gives advice on his website.

They have an appetite for travel, meeting people and service. They began traveling in China in December and moved on to Hong Kong, Bali, Thailand and Sri Lanka since we met them in Yangshuo.

What makes Drew & Caroline Intriguing?

They both are serene, humble and fearless. Considering US population is over 300 million, we don’t meet very many young Americans traveling in Asia. And then we came to learn they are Mennonites! I chuckle as I imagine a vision of Caroline in a horse drawn buggy going to Sunday service. That is a very long way from their present life on the road. They are not the typical backpackers because they also relish their (almost free) stays in luxury hotels.

We tend to enjoy creative people who shun the 9-to-5 working life so common in America. She displays her art in shows back home and has dreams of becoming a published writer. She has a knack for sharing 'the journey inside’ in her writing. I think she is capable of writing an interesting story of her life growing up in small town America.  He spurns routine and is working toward transforming his hobby into a profession by sharing his expertise on the Internet. His ‘tips’ are audacious and often funny. They have their dreams and don’t make excuses.

Lessons Learned from Drew and Caroline

We definitely will skim the cream of Drew’s ideas for trimming the travel budget without sacrificing comfort.

From Caroline, we are reminded that travel should be about the journey and not a destination. We will attempt modify the focus of our travel blog to emphasize ‘color’ of our journey; what we sense and think as we go along. Caroline has a section of her blog dedicated to "100 People" where in she talks about the most memorable people she meets along the way. We are co-opting that idea for our blog. We won’t have a separate section or shoot for a specific number, but we will begin to post profiles of some of the people we met along the way. This couple is our first example.
