Liberia has an international airport and could be a town in the US, with it's strip malls, large supermarkets and US chain restaurants. Most cars on the road were newer mini-vans and SUV's. Other than that, it is not a remarkable town. But we liked the change of pace and took a few days off the bikes here. It's the jumping off point to great nature areas on the peninsula or up the mountains to Santa Elena and Monte Verde. Santa Elena and Monte Verde have a lot to offer; hanging bridges in the jungle canopy, zip lines, wildlife, birds, frogs insects etc. and will have cooler temps. We decided to cycle the coastal highway then hop a bus up the mountain.

We noted that the town of Bagaces, just 25km down the road, has hotels and planned to stop there before the day got hot. But we were there in no time and continued on to the town Caņas. We finished riding the 51 km to Caņas just as the day was beginning to sizzle. It was just 9:30 am.

"Sodas" are tiny restaurants with simple inexpensive menus. We popped into one for breakfast before for finding our way to the nice Hotel Caņas (Started at $37, settled for $25) including air-co, and wifi.

Dave thoroughly explored Caņas finding it a large spread-out town as charmless as most cross-road towns. Not finding any inviting restaurants, he picked up a pre-packaged Ceasar salad, cheese and crackers from the large supermarket. The buses that travel up to the small mountain villages are older types without much luggage space. And the lady at the ticket booth said it would up to the driver to decide if he wants to take the bike. It might take some begging but Michelle said "let's leave the bikes here for a few days, come back, then go to San Jose from here."  We decided to ask in the morning and retired to our room to chomp our wonderful salad and cheese while watching Oprah and then Internal Affairs with Richard Gere....
