Windy and 39C
On the road at dawn again and riding the shoulder of the hilly highway. A fierce headwind kicked up as we neared the big lake, Lago de Managua. The wind is a two edge sword. It keeps us cooler, but makes us work harder. The road then skirted just next to the lake where we were treated with magnificent views of two volcanoes the big one is Volcan Momotombo. We did not linger cause we didn't know what the Managua roads would have in store for us. The heat and wind were slowing us down plenty. We passed roadkill that has morphed into the pavement only leaving a leathery outline of what once was...
We're still amazed at the numbers of mangoes that litter the roadside.
We left the rural countryside behind for a suburbia of sorts. But we did not find any places for lunch break in a shady breezy place. Could be because it is Sunday or just because it was too early yet. It was another 5km more before we hit Managua, passed two big hospitals and a big curve in the highway into town. We asked a policeman for directions. He could not figure out our map but he knew the ¨Metro-Centro´. ´Make a left at the signal...go straight to the 2nd rotunda.´ Easy enough.
We spotted some landmarks and realized we were getting close to our hotel more quickly than we expected. Then we saw a roadside outdoor food place with a giant tub of something steaming away. We just had to stop and investigate. It was a Managua TYPICO dish called Baho (pronounced bow) steamed under plastic in large tub heated on wood stove. A cornucopia of meat, vegetables, banana, herbs.. Plates for 50 ($2.30), 60 or 70 córdoba. We ordered pequeño and they gave us a massive pile of food! A unique opportunity to sample the local cuisine. Super...
We were low on local currency and could not find anyone to change our dollars. Then we discovered you can just pay with USD in the supermarket and the cash register will make the conversions. We received change in córdoba... And the rate was slightly better than the posted bank rate.....
Dave went back to the Inn with a mostly melted ice-cream cone from McD´s, which was only a few blocks away. But in this heat, the cone did not stand a chance!
