On Friday, we took the bus to Tequila, about hour and half from GDL (Guadalajara).

As we approached Tequila, fields of blue-green agave covered the landscape. We hopped off the bus and walked to the main square. We ran across Jesus, of Tequila's Tours, who sold us on his 2.5 hour tour of two distilleries, D' Reyes & Rubio. The Cuervo and Suiza distilleries were right off the town square, but we decided we liked Jesus...

We lucked out and got a private tour again because there were no other English speakers intrested in the tour on this quiet Friday afternoon town. As we boarded the tour bus (a wooden barrel), Michelle spotted this 3 inch long bright green bug on the steps. It posed patiently for her pictures. This alone was worth the price of admission!

We visited the oldest distillery "d 'Reyes", where Tequila is made only about 3 months out of the year, the old fashioned way. Producing a superior quality in small batches. Naturally, we got to sample 10 different ages and flavors of the tequila and decided that, unless the tequila is mixed in margarita, it's too strong for us. I did buy a small bottle of smooth coffee tequila. Syrupy and delicious.

We then visited the more modern Rubio distillery and observed the whole tequila making process, from the large dump trucks unloading the pinas, the piņa's being cut in half with saw before being stacked by hand in the towering pressure cookers where they then cook for 10 hours. Out comes this delicious syrupy sweet fibrous piņa. In a nutshell, that gets extracted, put in huge vats, fermented, distilled, water added and bottled. I noticed a small sink with fresh limes instead of soap for hand washing, and deduce that they are careful that no foreign chemicals enter the process.

Our last stop was a beautiful agave field where agave's stretched as far as the eyes could see.
I would have loved to watch the guys harvest them but according to our guide the harvesting at this time was being done several hours from there.

After the tour we stopped by the impressive Jose Juervo distillery and enjoyed a marguarita in their bar before heading back to GDL.

Mi and Dave, looks like you are really enjoying yourself. I really had no idea how Tequila is made. Loved the bug.
