Today's Dr. visit put a temporary damper on our plans. Sadly the tests reveal that I have cancer of the uterus. After the initial shock wore off and the blood came back into my brain, I became optimistic that we found out early. The Dr. said, of all the cancers to get, this is one that is most treatable. Next week more preliminary tests, SCAN, X-rays etc will be done and total hysterectomy is scheduled for May 6. If cancer hasn't spread, I won't even need chemo and we'll be on our merry way in roughly 2 months :)

In between those dates, Dave and I decided to go on one of our favorite backpacking trip up north in Big Sur area. While we lived in Santa Barbara we used to do this on our Anniversary weekend every year.  The Big Pine Trail is a scenic trail through Ventana Wilderness.  Contrasting annual grass meadows and open pine stands are found throughout the Wilderness. The wildflowers will be spectacular this year! And the deep canyons cut by the Big Sur and Little Sur Rivers support virgin stands of coastal redwoods. Twelve miles in, we'll reach some fantastic hot-springs. We plan to spend several days there, lazing in the springs and surrounded by nature before hiking out. And as always we then reserve a rustic cabin at the historic Big Sur Inn.

Aaldrik and Sonya on

Just checking your site to see if you were on your way yet, and then you come up with this news... But good to see you are already focussing on the day you'll actually be cycling out of town. Take good care of each other and hope to see you on the road real soon. Ciao, Aaldrik and Sonya :-)

Michelle/Dave, I am so sorry to hear the news that cancer has raised its ugly head into your lives. I have no doubts that you will beat it on all fronts. I will be cycling along the Pacific Coast from SF to SD in late May/early June, finishing in SD on the 8th of June. We'll keep in touch. I'd love to see you if you're in the Santa Barbara/LA area when I ride through.

Susan on

So sorry to hear about the health scare but glad you were checked out before the trip. I am sure you will get through this just fine and be on your way in no time. You have such a positive attitude and it shines through in your post. We will be thinking of you both and keeping a good thought. Let me know if you want to talk ( as you'll recall I went through this in 2000). Love ya. Susan
