Our destination today was Torrey, just west of Capitol Reef Nat. Park. We drove 225 miles this day including detours to Canyonlands National Park and Goblin Valley State Park.
After a minimal "Continental Breakfast" we were on the road promptly at 8:20am. It promised to be another fantastic day. The sun was out and the sky was bright blue. Our first stop, after about 33 miles, was Island in the Sky region of Canyonlands National Park. We had never included a stop there on any of our previous trips.  And what an amazing place it is. Imposing walls of red rock and breathtaking panoramic views of layer upon layers of walls, canyons, slots, huge boulders and pillars. Our pictures cannot begin to attempt to capture the complex dimensions. Hope you all enjoy them anyway.

We then doubled back to HW 191 and north to Interstate 70. We stopped for a great lunch just before the HW 24 cutoff  at Green River. Goblin Valley State Park is along the scenic route so we dropped in to see the odd mud monoliths cluster oddly in the small valley. We did not linger there but still left late enough to reach Capital Reef in the early evening. We wanted a hotel before Capital Reef but the few that were open looked a bit dreary. We thought of the Best Western in Torrey where we had stayed before. It was closed for the week. Hidden Springs Hotel was near and fortunately it too is a good one. We had a bowl of chili in the only place in town that was open (winter hours). Most places are closed. The chili was tasty.
