Ice on the tent and water bottles when we awoke! Pretty brutal to get out of our warm little cocoon to face the bitter cold. Dave always gets coffee ready while I start packing stuff and rolling pads from inside the tent. By 9 am we were on our way to Santa Elena (still in Big Bend Nat. Park). There we hike along the US side of narrow gorge through which the Rio Grande flows.

On our way again we take an unpaved "scenic' route. It was like driving on a washboard most of the way. Roadrunners darting occasionally in front of the car. Out in nowhere we come across this old empty house. It turned out to be an historic site and a Gilberto Lunas raised a large family here. He died in 1947 at age 108! Unbelievable how someone can survive in such harsh  hot and dry conditions.
Back on the paved road again we passed some fun little towns of Terlingua and Lajitas. The scenery was pretty drab but inhabitants made up for it by creating their own colorful eye-catchers. See pix.

We followed the Rio Grande again for particularly scenic stretch. Beautiful white rock formations and rolling hills. We stopped at an abandoned movie set and spent some time checking it out.  We arrived in Van Horn at around 6pm and nothing except Truck-stop was open on Christmas. So a hamburger it was.
