Amburg with Dave and Melyn
Entry 3 of 3 | show all | print this entry |
So Dave and I got up yesterday morning -- ok we got up at the crack of noon after a hard night of drinking (hard night for guys in their mid to late 30's) -- and he drove from Munich to his new home of Amberg, which is reasonably close to Nurenberg and close to the Czech border.
They just bought their house and are in the process of selecting their kitchen. There are many things that I really like about Europe (the "about to turn green" light is inspired as are the apparent regulations that don't allow 18 wheelers to drive in the left hand land on the autoban), but I gotta say this kitchen deal is really dumb. For those of you that are not aware of this, God knows I wasn't until Steve and Michelle explained it to me, when people move they take the entire kitchen and all the fixtures in the house with them. By kitchen, I don't just mean refrigerator, I mean stove, cabinets, evertyhing. So when you move in to most places, there is a completely empty room with hookups for water, gas, etc just sitting there and you have to go out and buy everything and get it installed. Such a strange concept for an American, because for us making kitchen renovations and replacing countertops and appliances is a way to add value to our homes -- since its a nice, new, staying addition to what you are selling.
last night we hit a beer fesitival in town. Lots of tents with people drinking good, local beer and stands with awesome brats and kraut. Really good stuff. Of course we had to grab (steal) a couple of the mugs they were serving the beer in. I do really like the local beer options here. Its great to go into a new German town and just order up one of the beers that they brew in that town, basically just for that town's consumption.
Off to Prague tomorrow. Weather has been pretty poor, hoping it gets better for some better light for pictures. Will be taking some in Prague and Vienna regardless and posting them up.
