Chengdu; a fantastic apartment to crash in and a big city to explore....sweet. Infact we didn't do too much exploring, took things relatively easy but went to a few temples, parks and of course the pandas. Was quite a saga getting there on public transport, but worked out a fraction of the price to taking a tour..but at one stage our rickshaw (3rd vechile of the trip) bottomed out in a rut in the middle of a cornfield; how we managed to get in the middle of a cornfield in a city of 14 million people still baffles clare and mark, but we made it to the pandas and they were cute and it wasn't at all like a chinese zoo....as in some of the other chinese cities, we found it hard to get cheap/quick eats from hole in the wall resturants..really good squid skewers were plentifull however; and we had our own kitchen to cook in. Settled on making pork schniztels with mash and brocolli 3 nights in a row...it was pretty bloody good. Finally found some real bread in Trustmart (a supermarket chain) had great baguettes for 50cents a stick; demolished a few of these. Also had the best noddle soup we experienced in china at a muslim soup kitchen; thinnly sliced beef and a dude who makes noodles out of dough in front of your eyes in about 20seconds for every bowl of noddles...we were off the pork due to an outbreak of pig disease which had killed over 40 people in the provence.....got a hardsleeper ticket to Xi'an and left the comfort of our apartment bedgrudingly....
