So today I wasn't very quick to get up. I mean I was up at 8:00 am because everyone in my room leaves by at least 9 am the latest so they are my alarm. I really enjoy the hostel. There is a large commons area and a huge kitchen and I have been able to meet a couple of characters here. For anyone who knows me they know I like to talk to new people and you can't beat the people you meet in hostels. For example there is a 40 something guy here named Eddie. He is staying at the hostel because he says it is cheaper than a hotel. He is Canadian and is in Edmonton because he is retiling a jacuzzi at the West Edmonton Mall. A couple of the Aussies and Kiwis go with him as it is a construction job that pays decent and these guys are here to get those types of jobs anyways. He always likes to sit down and talk with me for some reason. He also went to Korea so maybe he feels some kinship. He drinks every night and last night he fell asleep on the couch in the commons area. He likes to tell stories about his travels and claims to have traveled to 36 different countries along he confesses to having just finished college. Then there is Chris. Chris is a British mechanic who is traveling across Canada from Vancouver east. He has taken bus tours through most of the Western part of Canada and now is bored here in Edmonton. He makes his bed every morning in full British style. Tucking in the edges of the sheets, fluffing the pillow and making sure all the sheets are smoothed out. He claims it is so he doesn't get cold as two nights ago someone left the window open and the room was freezing, literally at around 5 degrees when we woke up under our super thin sheets. Wade is an Aussie who came over as his ancestors did to work on the railway. He is up for a job with CN fixing the rail around this area. But as seems to be the trend, construction jobs are all hurry up and wait. So he has to wait a month before the job starts so he is moving out of the hostel to stay for free in the old Railway museum in town. Finally there is Nina and Ju Kyoung. Nina is a 19 year old swiss girl who has one day to see all of Edmonton. She said she is going to wake up at 7 am to walk to the Royal Alberta Museum because I told her it is worth seeing. Hopefully she isn't too disappointed. Ju Kyoung is a Korean woman who came to Edmonton to live in Canada for a year. I helped her tonight to find a couple of places to try to get for cheap to live. I was up till 3 am because I did a load of laundry, my pants really, so I let her use my computer to look for rooms and I went through the list and picked a couple that might work for her. She is in Interior Design and dreams of working and living in New York city as a designer. Tomorrow I will meet her at 7 pm and make a couple of calls to some houses for rent. I let her use my computer as I am going to sleep because her laptop doesn't get the internet. The amazing smells that were coming up from the kitchen as I went to bed at 3 am was compliments of Taylor. A 23 year old guy who is covered in tatoos but despite it is a really nice guy who is out here to work at Lake Louise's kitchen. He is going into Calgary today to sort out his application. Lastly there is Rory. He is the night guy working at the hostel. He wears full formal suits wherever he goes. Which means when he came into work tonight he was dressed up in a full length suit with a fedora. His ambition since he dropped out of university is to become a fictional writer. He is currently working on a book about 13th century Spain just before it defeats Muslim lead Granada. He is also missing several teeth due to smoking and he is only 24 years old. So these are the people of Hi Edmonton. Compared to their stories my day touring was uneventful but I will write about that in my next blog.
