13 OCTOBER 2012 - (Cont’d)  - We had a great drive today from Sparta, only a few hours driving through some beautiful countryside and on great roads. Happier today.  Just before Skala we saw stopped and took a few photos of some stunning scenery of the mountains with gorgeous olive and fruit trees and backdrop of mountains.  We arrive in gorgeous Monemvasia, a medieval town which according to our Lonely Planet guide it is Greek’s equivalent to France’s Mont St-Michel.  This fortress is an iceberg-like slab of rock moored off the coast, with sheer cliffs rising hundreds of metres from the sea, and a single, highly defendable causeway. This stunning medieval village is enclosed within the walls of the rock’s kastro, with the modern mainland village of Gefyra just across the causeway. Gefyra is a pretty little town with a small harbour, cute colourful boats and some beachside cafes and pensions.

We decide we are going to stay in Monemvasia, very close to the medieval village.  We check into Hotel Lazareto, a gorgeous hotel located just outside the fortress walls and buildings made out of stone.  For 90 euro we get a lovely room plus breakfast.  We get shown to our room and we have our picnic lunch on our balcony.  Its so nice to have a baguette with ham, cheese and tomato washed down with juice and water and of course chocolate.

We then went to the entrance of Monemvasia, the most beautiful medieval village we have ever seen.  Wow, its so gorgeous, we were snap happy hear just like Oia.  The nice thing about it also that it wasn’t bombarded with tourists and we could get photos without lots of people.  We had to stop at a cafe and have freshly squeezed orange juice and then headed back Gefyra.  We wandered around Gefyra cute little harbour had colourful fishing boats.  We walked down further and of course we stopped and checked out some yachts.  We walked around some streets and it seems too quiet, either not many locals are here or home owners have left as summer is over?

Anyway it was nice and peaceful and not dealing with crowds was a nice change.  We headed back to our room over the causeway.  Troy went across the road for a quick dip in the ocean and I just chilled in our room.  Dinner was another baguette with ham, cheese and tomato and olives.

On TV tonight guess what is on? the Greek movie “My life in Ruins” with Greek subtitles.  We have seen this movie a few times but I don’t think I have ever seen Troy laugh so much.  He was pissing himself laughing, well we both were.  I think been here and seeing it in Greece after all our adventures has made this movie even funnier and we can relate to it more.  It is so funny and great to have a big laugh.  “Poopee” the bus driver well we have seen a few of his twin brothers here in Greece haha!  I haven’t seen Troy laugh so much as he did tonight.  It was great.  Troy says “I wonder what the Greeks think of this movie?”, mmmmm!

14 OCTOBER 2012 - We have breakfast at our hotel Lazareto.  We check out and pay the bill (90 euro).  Mary actually drove today.  We say goodbye to beautiful Monemvasia. This town was a very worthwhile visit and was recommended to us by an American/Greek retired couple (one of them still a travel writer) that we met at Santorini airport.
