We only travel for about 3 hours and we arrive in Bordeaux, France. First impression, its beautiful, reminded us of a bigger version of Avignon.
We check into our accommodation, Hotel Studio and once again we are sent off to another block of apartments (a lot of hotels/hostels have a main block with reception and then apartments scattered all over the place). We walk to our room which is still in the same street and open the door, Oh my god this place is so run down, its absolutely “handsome”. It reminded me of some really run down dodgy place in Sydney. At least the bed is decent and the bathroom is clean
. We actually had two rooms, one with a queen bed and one with two singles. We dump our stuff and go for a walk. It is so muggy and hot and felt quite uncomfortable. We walk around the town checking out some beautiful spots and then decide to go the cathedral. As we were walking through this area it was so run down and dodgy, an area full of Middle East/Arabic influence, lots of rubbish and groups of young guys that I made sure we avoided, its a very seedy part of town. I didn’t feel too safe here at all so I said to Troy I will just take a couple of photos and lets get the hell out of here. Troy says he didn’t feel too safe in Barcelona, for me I don’t feel safe here. Barcelona didn’t worry me much but you knew to be careful especially at night. We left this part of town and walked around checking a lot of cow statues that are everywhere. I felt somewhat better once we got out of that real dodgy part of town. We found a supermarket and bought some food for dinner, a baguette, ham, cheese, tomato, apple, bananas, juice and some sort of pastry called Canales de Bordeaux. We will just call it a day and stay in our room, Bordeaux is quite dodgy (well not entirely all of it) but we are also quite tired.
30 JUNE 2010 - Mary feels like crap today. I had no sleep listening to Troy’s very loud snoring all night and also the hotel walls here are paper thin
. Several times I was frightened because it sounded like someone was trying to come into our room so I got up to check no-one was in our room. You could here loud doors opening and closing and footsteps which sounded like it was in our room. The bangs in the night made me feel uneasy. Also even though the bed is comfortable I feel itchy all the time so I don’t know if its the bed because it only started here. So Mary is not happy today, I don’t like this hotel and wish we were leaving. This hotel is in a really run down building and you can hear everything, even heard someone going to the toilet during the night. Just like it states in Lonely Planet which I didn’t read before coming here that “the walls are paper thin so bring your ear plugs”. I hate this room but I doubt it worries Troy he sleeps.
We had lunch and then went for a walk around town. Its a really hot day today and not in a great mood to be sightseeing. Unless you are into wineries and love your wine then there isn’t a lot to do in Bordeaux. Its a beautiful city but that is about it so two nights is more than enough for me. Troy liked Bordeaux more than me.
1ST JULY 2010 - Happy Birthday Tony! We pack our bags and check out of this hotel (thank god) as I have a great souvenir from this place - bites from bed bugs. I was itchy for two days and it was the bed.
29TH JUNE 2010 - This morning at 8am we leave San Sebastian. We wish we could stay longer as its a great place to relax and not have to do so much sightseeing.
