Where I stayed
23 APRIL 2010 - Today we had a slack morning
This place is famous for tubing, you hire a tube and float down the river for a few hours. They also do kayaking and rock climbing. It is such a laid back place, no street sellers except for the tuk tuk drivers and an occasional shop assistant asking if we want a massage. Its a nice change to walk down the streets and not get hassled. This place is a haven for hippy tourists. We decided to check out the Sunset Bar, it looked pretty old and funky and to get to it we had to walk over a very old wooden rickity bridge. There were hippies there and this young English girl’s voice asks us if we want a drink. She was working behind the bar dressed in real hippy shorts, some sort of t-shirt, headband, stockings and glittery eyeshadow
Troy orders a beer and the hippy chick hands him a brochure of the Sunset Bar and asks us if we wanted to buy some cheap drugs. Cheap drugs --- cool! It was all fun, she wasn’t pushy or anything just having a casual conversation with us. The clothes these guys were wearing were very interesting, it was like “what the f**k are they wearing clothes”
We go back to our resort and had a swim in the river which had a decent current. The surroundings were just beautiful with the stunning karsts around us. We head back to our bungalow and Mary photographs some beautiful butterflies. They are just so pretty, some huge black ones and some white ones with orange tips. I love butterflies.
We head back into town for dinner at the Organic Farm Cafe where we had a vegetarian meal and the best mulberry fruit shakes. We read into the Lonely Planet guide that they recommend the mulberry fruit shakes, must say there were so good we had two each. We just made it back to our resort and then it started raining
24 APRIL 2010 - Today is a beautiful day in Vang Vieng, its not as hot as yesterday but a nice pleasant day. We head into town which is about a 10 minute walk from our resort. We stop to have a banana and chocolate pancake for about $1.30 each. Yum! Troy goes to check out the tubing but he thought it wasn’t such a good idea to go alone for safety reasons so we skipped it. Mary didn’t want to do it. We walked around town and then went back to our resort and sat by the lake. The scenery around here is beautiful. This is the place to come here and do nothing, a place to chill out. We have now been here for a few days and there is some sort of creature around the place that makes this unusual sound, seriously it sounds exactly like it is saying “F**K YOU” all the time and I want to know what the hell it is. We heard the rude creature underneath our bungalow at one stage (could be a local hey?). Troy thinks it could be the gecko or lizard or something, whatever it is doesn’t have very nice manners!
We had a snack for lunch at our resort and then walked into town again, had a fruit shake at a nice place with the beautiful mountains as our backdrop and then went home again. We watched the sunset back at our resort and listened to the crappy Laotian music (all the Asian music sounds shocking) and Troy seemed to be into it bopping along and chilling out and fitting in with the local music while next minute Mary starts bopping to Brittany.... don’t know what is worse, Anything goes when your head feels like they have have just frizzelled in the heat, the heat does does weird things to you....We then headed back into town once again and had great pizza and another fruit shake for dinner. These fruit shakes are addictive.
We leave Vang Vieng tomorrow and head for Luang Prabang which is an 6.5 hr bus trip.
