Karachi

This was one of the first trips I made with Kevin Padden.
Karachi has such a gulf between the very very rich and the very very poor. It's frightenly easy to become hardened to the sight of poverty. Stopped at a traffic light, a little girl, maybe 9 years old, with only one arm, her father (uncle/brother/who knows) one eyed, both in rags. We were strongly advised to ignore them.
On a lighter note - on our last night, the head waiter came up to our table and said to Kevin, "I bet you'd like a Gin and Tonic". Somewhat surprised at this offer in a Muslim country he replied, "Oh, I'd love one". The let out a huge laugh and said "Well... you can;t have one!"
On the roof of the hotel, they had an open-air buffet. In the middle of the roof was a guy making naan bread in a tandoor. Kneading the dough, then flattening it out and slapping it on the inside of the hemispherical oven, through a hole in the top. It had enough moisture to stick to the top without falling in and he'd hoick it out perfectly done.
