This week has been hellishly long with all my free time devoted to grading "essays."  The term essay is liberally applied, as most students can't really spit out more than a half baked sentence... but it's a start.  To be fair, this isn't across the board... some kids manage a fairly descent conversational paragraph!

The other day, talking shop, Austin said he'd always wondered why teachers seemed to like "the dumb kids who try rather than the smart kids."  Now we know.  Dumber (slower learners... or sometimes here poorer kids without resources) kids trying are just so darn cute!  I love helping low level 14 year olds struggle through an activity with furrowed brows more than scolding higher level students for whining.

In that spirit, here are some of the cuter entries from this weeks' labor!

The prompt for 2nd Grade (14 years old): 
 Dear Mesa, 
How's it going?  Thanks for your letter.  It made me happy.  Do you want to know about my country, Korea?  Here is my answer:

Dear Mesa,
 korea is a good country why?  this country has good guy and ger.

Dear Mesa,
 what's your favorite food?  my favorite food is curry.  maybe your
favorit food a nacho that is very nice.

Dear Mesa,
mesa teacher teach english
thank you

Dear Mesa,
 famous food is kimchi bulgogi and so on... mesa come here my country
so eat some food.

Dear Mesa,
 "your boyfriend very handsome?  I don't know him so you take a picture
okay? okay i love you!"

Dear Mesa,
 korea is a beautiful country and we have many delicious foods.
Especially kimchi is the most famous.  I'm very afraid of my country.

Dear Mesa,
i live korea is own green trees is beautiful and famous jeju, keonju,
mokpo a lot of funny i love korea mesa!  korea is most beautiful

Dear Mesa,
if you eat kimchi you'll be happy and good in your body.

Dear Mesa,
korean students study hard so they should get good grade on this test.

Dear Mesa,
Korean is very kind and food is very delicious.  Why don't we go to
the concert next week?  call me back!  all the best 태희

Dear Mesa,
korea's traditional clothes is hanbok.  you wear, you'll very beautiful!

Dear Mesa,
first, korea has a famous food, it is kimchi.  second, korea has a
fmous person.  she is kim yu na.  she has a good medal she is a figure
skating player.

First graders (13 years old) had to talk about their favorite food, season, or subject:

i like spring because it is war.
i like candy
so sweet and delicious food
not healthy for our health

i like subject art because i am happy in art class.

i like season winter because i make snowman play snowfight. my
birthday is in winter.

i like english because easily

That's enough cuteness for one day.  Happy good time from Korea!  :)
