Koh Samui

It was my third time in Koh Samui, an upmarket tourist haven with an International airport. It is similar to Bali, a place to go to eat good food, be pampered, lie on the beach, drink, shop and perhaps have some clothes made. We had hit the wall with regards to Thai food and were excited to get some good western food. We booked a place on the main beach in the area and I was excited to get some Mexican food.

The main beach is lined with restaurants, bars, shops and more of the same. It is a perfect 6km beach that has been totally developed. You can eat dinner right on the beach. The beach is quite beautiful with perfect surf for swimming in. Koh Samui is an ideal place for a beach holiday if you must have all of the comforts from home.

We found a real California style Cantina that had cheap Margaritas and spent 4 of the next five nights there, wishing it had been 5 in a row. We ate and drank well for the first time in a long time. It felt really great to go out and eat in a proper restaurant after so many bamboo huts and street food meals. They had a great Verde sauce that is uncanny in Asia. I smothered my chicken nachos and Chimichanga's in pure palatable ecstasy. We fell into this routine and spent our days on the beach or watching DVD's to nurse our hangovers. We hadn't drank in a long time and it showed. The five nights went by pretty fast and we were then on our way to Koh Phangan, home of the famous, Full Moon Party where 10 to 15 thousand people show up to party the night away on a bar laden beach in the Gulf of Thailand.

Life without Mexican food must be tough
I am happy to hear that you had the opportunity to indulge in our north american fiesta of flavors.
