Today we arrived at Costa Maya, Mexico, at about 7:30 this morning,
stepping out onto the balcony of the room, the humidity was already
77%... hot and stuffy, tried to take some pictures from the balcony, but
the camera and video camera lens kept steaming up!
I had my two tank dive this morning, started a bit late, but was
well worth the wait. We got kitted up and took about a 10 minute boat
road to the dive site, Ponta Tam, went down to 22.5m, and it was
stunning, got lots of pictures, the water temp was stunning, 29
degrees, and the viz was stunning! Got lots and lots and lots of
pictures underwater. After a 45 minute surface intervale, we went to
the next dive site, Jardines, which was also just as stunning. Stunning
diving!
The dissapointing thing about the dive, was that there was not tons
of fish, but this is due to the coast being very over fished. The reef
system however is in stunning condition, diving has only been going on
for about 3 years.
Once leaving the port area, there is extreme poverty in Costa Maya,
they have only really has electrity in the last three years, with the
start of the cruise ships coming to Costa Maya, which is creating the
place into a tourist destination, but there is still very little to see
outside of the port at the moment, except for extreme poverty,
accomodation ranges from old school busses, abandoned cars, boats,
caravans, and some even in tents! Pretty much anything goes! The
beaches are absoulty magnificant in parts, as the others are very much
polluted with plastics and rubish, not suprising to find a completely
abandoned hotel! However, I think in about 5 years, this will all
change and this could be a top tourist destination!
After the shore excursions, came back to the boat for a nice shower
and then went down to the port area to see the shopping, and the bars,
mexican atmosphere etc. Stopped off at Tequila International.. yes they
really do have over 200 types of tequila, and yes.. you can taste most
of them!!!
They have a couple of bars (party areas) in the port area, including
a pool bar.. and this is the real type of pool bar, its a really big
swimming pool, with a bar around the edge at pool level.. very very
cool, and the party was really going there!
Mexico never fails to dissapoint, and it didnt again, the amount of
people coming back to the boat, hardly able to walk, and very loud, was
to say the least, vast.. such entertainment!
TEQUILA!!!
