Hi grog bloggers,

Day 4 - 9 June 2011:
Before I begin here's a quick quote from the documentary about a lovable, San Diegan news anchor...

"Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diago, which of course in German means 'a whale's vagina'" - Ron Burgundy.

Anyway... To celebrate Shelly's 29th birthday we planned a day at San Diego Zoo (about a two and a half to three hour drive from LA). She is none-the-less dissapointed we had no cake. This is coming from the girl who is yet to give me a proper birthday present two years running.

We awoke early (5:30ish) so we could be on the road to San Diego before the crazy LA peak hour hit. Despite our best efforts we still had to deal with heavy traffic even at that hour. Surprisingly everyone is calm on the roads. There is adequate room to pass (up to 8 lanes in some parts so far) so they can get around you if needed. No one has any road rage... boring!

We got down to San Diego about 8:30. The zoo didn't open till 9:30 so we grabbed a coffee from a nice, big, tattoed man. He gave us some pointers about where to go in LA.

After our Orange Mocha Frappacionnos we headed to the zoo. This zoo has to be the best we have ever been in. The upkeep is awesome and they have so many different kinds of animals. We actually got lost a number of times because the park is so expansive, and Shelly can't read a map.

Highlights were seeing the female hippo and her calf frolicking in the water. Baby got back. Another was seeing the lioness charge some kids that were running past her cage. Unfortunately there was some perspex in between her and the little lamb chops. We also took a double decker bus tour that covered the vast majority of the park. It was nice not to have to drive for a while :)

At about 6:00pm we hit the road back to LA (after Shelly had bought pressies for the kids in the gift shop). By the time we got home, we were knackered and ready for dinner and bed.

What do you call an Aussie squirrel?

That's some funny shit right there! Shelly's intermintent comments are whitty and funny. I find the dialogue from the main author quite good! Keep it up trippers. News on the home front is that the mysterious building developments in the park opposite you guys includes, a basketball ring and some other shit that doesn't interest me.
