Eventhough new year is not itself such a big deal, there are many festivities all week long around teh Kathmnandu valley, specially in Bakhtapur which is now part of Kathmandu, but it used to be a separate city. Our religion and culture teacher invited us to his house for a total of 3 days to observe the festivities. The most exating one was the charriot festival, where a huge charriot is built to carry Siva's terrific for called Bahirav, There are 4 ropes on each side of the charriot which is placed on the middle of a small square inside the city. The city is divided into north and south and people line on their respective sides to pull the charriot. Who ever gets the cahhriot to their side wins. It was so exicted watch the charriot going from onbe side to the other for almost 2 hours
It's also very dangerous as people just crowd the place and usually starts late at night. People have lost their legs by getting run over by the charriot. We were safely watching from teh steps of a temple, plus this year the festival started earlier since the election day was the next day. No one won this year as the pulling kept going all night long until the nest morning and they had to stop to let otehr festivals begin.
On another ocation I went with my host family to Shivapuri which is a nature reserve on a mountain just north of Kathmandu. We went all the way to a buddhist monastery and had lunch there.
A few days ago we wnt to Patan, which is souht of Kathmandu to eat Newaru food, which is very good. We also went to a museum in there.
