Didn't have a clue what time to set off in the morning. Looked like I was going to have to drive through the storms whatever time I left. I did consider staying in Charleston and extra night, but there was still no guarantee that it would be the same tomorrow. I know I go on about storms a lot, but these are not like the light drizzle we have at home. These are on another level entirely.

I decided to drive to a town about halfway along the route called Orangeburg. I knew I could get there before the line of storms did, and could hang out in a McDonalds where they have wi-fi, so I could look at the weather radar. The drive to Orangeburg was fine. Blues skies all the way, but I could see clouds approaching as I arrived. I had some breakfast and checked the radar. It looked like I could drive between two storms, and get away with just a few showers. But these storms can just materialise from nothing...and one did.

As I started to drive up into the mountains, the sky started to get very dark, so dark I had to put my head lights on. Then all hell broke loose. First the rain. This was the worst rain I've ever seen. I had to stay as close to the car in front, so I could see his tail lights, as I couldn't see the road markings at all. I was convinced I would drive off the side of the road if I lost sight of him. There was no where to pull over at all, and even if there was, I wouldn't have been able to see it. I'm really not exaggerating to say it was dark as night by now. Then to make matters worse the lightning started, with huge cracks of thunder. To make matters worse, I had read that a soft top car offers no protection against lightning strikes. YAY! I didn't feel in control of the car. There was so much water on the road, it felt like the car was losing grip. I turned the stereo up as loud as I could. The song that was coming from my iphone was Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl. Always reminds me of my mate Mark G, who first played me this song. I was thinking, I wish Mark was here.... so he could suffer too. lol. Then Kylie, Better The Devil You Know came on. Another loud crack of thunder and lightning, so I decided to sing along with Kylie at the top of my voice (not for the first time on this trip). There was nothing else I could do. It seemed to go on forever, but eventually it started to get lighter, and I came out the other side. 10 mins later, and it was bright sunshine and the black clouds were in my rear view mirror.

Rest of the drive was really nice. The air was a lot cooler even with the sun out. Arrived in the mountain town of Asheville safe and sound, but was in DESPERATE need of booze...and lot's of it. Unfortunately, my room wasn't ready at the hotel, so I had a drive around. The scenery here is amazing. Lot's of beautiful mountain homes set in the most amazing scenery. Went out later to a bar that advertised the best Sunday Tea dance around (btw Tea Dance is just a term for gay disco on a Sunday) Anyway, I got there, and there were precisely five people there. Hello Dolly must have been on TV?!

Had a few drinks, then this drunk guy decides it would be appropriate to grab hold of me. WTF?? I pushed him away and he say's "what's the matter with you? Don't you wanna be with me?" I said "Not while there are dogs in the street" I left after that.

Found another bar in the town centre, again, not very busy. The bartender was the lovely Christy who is a pre-op transexual. A couple of the locals came in, and we had a great time. Lot's of scotch, laughter, even the odd jager shot or two. After the day I had, it was just what I needed (Thank you guys X)
