Hello from Broomfield, Colorado!

Helen and I sadly said "see you later" to the Elliott's this morning as our two week stay with them came to a close. (And, because many of you may have read my short note about not knowing whether I will have internet capabilities at this new family's home, the answer is yes! I do! ) I will tell you all about our new host family, but first I want to share our day with you.

It started off as a routine day: educational session in the morning and rehearsal (dance, band, vocal, etc...) in the afternoon. After a short break, we all met together to discuss diversity. After a brief discussion of the meaning of diversity and what it means to the UWP program, we gathered together for an activity. We all stood on one side of a white line. Our leader, JC, would ask us a question and those of us to whom the question applied would cross the line. For example, those of you who consider yourself a minority or a member of a minority group, cross the line. Some questions were basic such as identifying the vegetarians, the left-handed writers, and those from Europe. However, some questions dug deeper into the lives of our castmates, such as questions regarding racism, religion, and sexual orientation arose. It was very impactful to cross the line - or not cross the line - and stare into the eyes of those whose view points were different or considered themselves differently. Our usual chatty group became very quiet as realizations were made and some tears were shed. It was definitely an experience that I won't forget. It gave all of us something to think about as our day ended.

Helen and I met our new host family today and they are wonderful :) Doug and Tina Reeves live in Broomfield, Colorado and have 3 children: Jonathan (22), Maddie (18), and Millie (16). Jonathan doesn't live with the family but the two sisters do. Maddie and Millie are both avid athletes and, from what Doug and Tina have told us, are rarely home. Mom, remember when that was me! :) Maddie is a soccer play and is training for her first year at Regis College in Colorado. They have a black dog named Maverick. We live next door to 2 castmates and down the street from 2 staff members. Mom, do you feel relieved? :) We will be driving into Denver for rehearsal every day in the UWP van. The Reeves have many plans for Helen and I! We miss the Elliott's but are excited to get to know this new family!

That's all for now. We have to leave for Denver each morning by 7:15 a.m. so we are probably going to go to bed earlier. Actually, knowing me, I won't go to bed any earlier :)

Have a wonderful week everyone!
