Arequipa, the first tastw of Peru
Early wake up, meet my group which is much much smaller, and older which I guess is nice. Back to the airport to fly to Arequipa. Meet some of my tour mates, have a chat on the plane. I get told that my pass for the Inca trail, the main reason I came to Peru was declined... Not the best news, but will still make the best of my time here. We arrive in Arequipa, which is a very dry, almost white city. It is Peru's second biggest city. We met our local guide Freddy, which is his name on his passport by the way. He is the sweetest, funniest Peruvian man. He is super funny, laughing and joking all the time. He takes us to a spot where we can see 3 volcanoes which are all 3 active. He also shows us some of the locol foods and drinks. Now, I didn't know this but, we were going to be mostly in very high altitude, which can really mess wih your body functions. He showed us the local Coca leaves which is what they make Cocain from, and it really helps with the altidude. You can consumer in different forms, ( and no, not my snorting it..)Candy, tea, cookies or you can just chew the leaves like the locals do. We then check into our hotel, which is really nice, lunch in the square and some free time. We then went to a monastary, which was so unexpected and different. We had a very good local guide which took us through the monastary. So for some history, the Spanish conquored Peru and turned all Peruians into Catholics. And this is why this monastary exists, infact there are still nuns that live there today. It was really interesting to see how they live and sacrificed themselves to the church. I went to draw money inthe square, only to realise that my card is gone. Now if you are reading this from when I left New York, you can see that I have run into a spell of bad luck. That night we had a dinner with the group, I crashed straight after, having like 6 hours sleepnin 2 days can really mess with you head. Will sort out card in the morning, not gonna stress about it now, nothing I can do but cancel it...
