The Chistmas Play...
For anyone that has ever taught English in Taiwan, (Maybe other countries?) You understand what a big deal the Christmas Show is. Unlike back home where kids perform shows to have fun and celebrate, here the show is really for the parents and a display of the kid's English ability. There ends up being a lot of pressure on the teachers (We had to create and write 6 different plays between the two of us) to produce something outstanding and also on the kids who start practicing 2 months in advance. We had lots of fun along the way but the Chinese teachers are always hard on the kids and insist that they practice over and over memorizing all their lines on top of their regular English lessons and their Chinese classes (These are Kindergarten and grades 1-2). The truth is that parents here expect a lot from the kids and the shows are a time to demonstrate their abilities.

The end result was a success, the parents enjoyed the show and most of the kids had a great time. The two of us were the hosts with a Translator (I think she messed up my corny jokes!). Since the parents are always on their kids for their work we decided to have a "pop-quiz" and tested the parents on the show, with prizes. It was funny and they really enjoyed it.

After the show the Boss of the school took the teachers out for a nice dinner. No one was celebrating Christmas so they stayed pretty late, but we took off to enjoy a nice Christmas Eve at the Apt, putting out Santa's cookies listening to music and wrapping presents.

Christmas sure is strange out here, nobody celebrates it and you can't see any "Christmas spirit" around except commercially in the stores and stuff. We miss our family and friends (and the snow!) But we're having a great time!

p.s. After searching everywhere we still found no Egg Nog (lots of Chinese rum) and no Amaretto! But we did find Crannberry sauce and Stove Top stuffing.

Merry Christmas!!
