Show trip route
Today we headed an hour north of Chaing Mai to spend the day riding elephants. We arrived at the camp to be greeted by a 20 day old elephant which right there stole our hearts. He just kinda wobbled around and nudged everyone with his heads. We were able to hang out with a few more older elephants while they begged people for bananas before their show started. The elephants wowed us with their abilities to paint, play basketball, dance, play harmonica, and even stand on their heads. Truely a renassance type of animal.
We then trekked through the forrest for about an hour, walking through rivers and up hills and through villages. Our guide didn't speak english so we named our elephant Braham, from Sharron, Lois and Braham's Elephant Show. And we knew ours was a boy so it was easy to choose his name out of the lot. Later in the day we changed it to Stampy because that's what Bart Simpson named his pet elephant. Our guide, however, loved Stampy more than we did and laid on the elephants head and sang him Thai songs into his ear. It was a rather enjoyable time.
From there we floated down the river on bamboo rafts, rode through another village in a cart pulled by an ox (definately not my favorite animal) and then toured an orchid farm. The elephant riding was by far the most exciting and we were sad to know we couldn't bring the baby back home with us.
