I know it seems strange but after two weeks of eating Thai food for three meals a day we were sick of it. On our last night in Chaing Mai we couldn't bear to have another meal of noodles so we headed to La Gondola resturant where we dined next to the river. We had our meals and a few glasses of wine and then, around 11pm, decided that we should go home and pack so we could fly out the next morning. As we go to leave the table that had been carrying on all night calls us over and asks us not to leave and to sit with them. We waivered back and forth for a few seconds but ultimately sat down with them to celebrate a birthday party. The birthday celebrator was a Belgian guy turning around 60 we guessed. His two best friends were also from his homeland and looked to be roughly around the same age. And, of course, their wives were Thai and half their age. I got sat in the middle of one of the guys and a wife who ended up being the most entertaining woman we had met in Thailand. She was decked out in jewelery and had eyeshadow that would make any 80s pop star jealous. And she laughed at everything. She and I quickly became best friends and she told me all about when she was in Florida her husband made her dreams come true and let her drive around in a limo for a night. She was great. The couples were already on their way to being good and drunk and once we sat down they silently vowed to make us the same way. When we arrived the owner started bringing the wine out in pitchers and, of course, the Sambuca shots were being taken in rounds. We had two guys playing guitar for us and the Belgians were content singing with their cloth napkin hats. We soon had our own napkin hats and were urged to pick a song to perform. Since we couldn't read the Thai music sheets we were at a loss as to what to sing. But not to worry, the men wanted to sing Frank Sinatra's "My Way" for the tenth time. We ate cake and carried on for a few hours. They all tried to convince us not to fly out the next day but we told them we had to. Molly did get an invitation to come back and stay at one couple's new bed and breakfast so I'm sure she'll be returning as quickly as she can to make that happen.
