We arrived today, and much to our dismay, did not welcome us they way we wished it would have. Molly had booked us at a bed and breakfast which seemed like a dream come true: $70 a night, a five minute walk to the city center, and best of all, a full breakfast to wake up to. However, the shuttle dropped us off at a less that picture perfect old house in a neighborhood that made the motorpark look 4-star. We collected our six bags of luggage (we did a lot of shopping in Christchurch) and were greeted on the front stood by a man who had a reconstructed face from what we could only imagine was a result of an awful burn. We hated to admit it, but he was really creepy. And we couldn't understand half of what he was saying. He ushered us to our two room wing that smelled like a mildewy basement and was painted light pink and mint greet. The bathroom door was a shower curtain and the random pieces of rejection antique store furniture were placed in the most inappropriate places. He told us never to leave the door unlocked and we could only imagine it was because of the neighbors living across the street.
He continued the tour and took us to the main house where there was a tv room and kitchen. There he explained his other recent American guests. One couple left without a word and the other left a horrible critique on a traveling website.
We left to go into town as quickly as we could with every intention of finding a new place to stay. As we walked down the street, right in the middle of town, we notcied a man sitting naked on a blanket leaning against the crosswalk sign. Then it started raining.
Welcome to Wellington...
As the evening progressed we found a new hotel, the moms elected me to be the one to tell the scary man we didn't want to stay there, I told the scary man (a lie) that Jane just had a hip replacement and we had to stay in town close to a hospital, Molly and I carted our six bags of luggage across town to our new hotel, couldn't get the elevator to work, got locked out of our room, had dinner and then saw a movie...
Hopefully the weather will be sunny and welcoming tomorrow...and Jane's hip gets better soon.
