Having not showered in 4 days (a personal best, mind you) our first order of business was to find a shower. Just as Danni and I were eyeing up a creek that ran behind a willow tree next to the cricket field her friend Megan called and saved us from the shameful act we were about to partake in. Now Megan is Danni's friend from back home in California and her father has a house here in Queenstown. So Megan and her boyfriend Pete came and saved us from the creek and took us to Pete's house where he offered to house, feed and clean us for the next couple of days. Little did he know, Megan had also made plans with her ex-roommate from Spain, Naomi, and her friend, Megan...also both from California
After dropping us off, we never saw much of Megan (Queenstown Megan by way of California) so luckily for us we got along famously with Pete and even more so with Megan (friends with Naomi fame) and Naomi. The five of us girls were left to fend for ourselves for New Years Eve and we had a most fabulous time.
Here in Queenstown time is a very difficult concept for us. It doesn't get dark until almost 11pm. We never know when to go out or stay in and never know what time it really is. So we stayed at Pete's house for the majority of the night just drinking and playing cards. After many rounds of ring of fire Megan and Naomi (aka Nanimomo as Mike likes to call her) admited to doing lyrical movement (acting out the lyrics of music). After they had performed a Mariah Carey top single (without music might i add) Molly and I also shared our love of lyrical movement by performing Stickshifts and Safetybelts by Cake. Molly, Megan and I then put on a brilliant performance of Bohemian Rapsoedy by Queen before taking to different sides of the room for a Lyrical Movement Battle. Megan and Naomi represented the West Coast and, of course, Molly and I danced for the East
(Oh wow. Did I really admit to all that??)
We then went downtown where all the streets were blocked off and there was live music coming from multiple stages. It seemed as if the entire South Island had all come to Queenstown for the new year. The five of us were making friends everywhere we went but by the time the fireworks were over we were just too tired to go any further. We went back to the house only to be attacked by a horrible possom climbing up the side of Pete's house. We irrationally ran around Pete's house and closed all the windows and sat in fear for about an hour or so before we just fell asleep.
The next morning we woke up and laid out on the porch of our soon to be new home (fingers crossed) and waited for Ferg Burger to open. We had all heard endless stories about how wonderful Ferg Burger was but it wasn't until we tried the $10 burgers for ourselves that we knew the magical goodness they contained. We sat in silence at the park while we each took a half hour to eat our burger. It is reason enough to come to New Zealand. They are that good.
