I came to Portland on the recommendation of the salesperson I spoke to at the Meredith Ford Dealership.  I have a feeling her idea of what makes a great city is slightly different from mine.  Portland seemed to have a lot of shopping and cafe opportunities but not much in the way of entertaining or educational things to see and do.  The one thing that made going to Portland worthwhile for me was the nearby Fort Williams Park.  It is home to the historical ruins and remains of a large fort, but the highlight of the park is the extremely picturesque Portland Head Lighthouse.  Perched on the edge of a bank of cliffs, it is exactly the type of lighthouse I had been looking for to get some photos.  Unfortunately, the lighthouse itself wasn't open to visitors until Memorial Day (like almost all of the attractions in New England).

My next stop was the capital city of Augusta, and I stopped along the way to visit the DeLorme Map Store.  Which also happens to be the home of "Eartha," the largest globe in the world.

Upon my arrival at the Maine State House, I was surprised to discover how rural the area around the capitol seemed to be.  There were certainly plenty of buildings around, but unlike many other capitols I've been to lately, it wasn't overshadowed and cramped in by dozens of massive skyscrapers.  The area was very quiet and peaceful in the evening and I took the opportunity to stroll the grassy park across from the building and take a few photos while the sun was setting.  After that, I stopped for a while to work on some photos on my computer before heading to a KFC to grab a bite for dinner.  The KFC was closing in about fifteen minutes and the server told me that most things were sold out for the night, but if I wanted chicken strips I could have all I wanted for free.  That sounded like my kind of deal, so I had dinner compliments of the Colonel tonight.
