The story of the Abu Simbel temples is incredible. Originally constructed in 1264 BC, they were in danger of being permanently submerged with the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960's.

Several ideas were proposed, with the eventual winner being the plan of simply dismantling the statues by carving them into 20 ton blocks, lifting, and then reassembling them in a new location further away from the river.

Getting there is a bit of a challenge. Due to threats of banditry, the Egyptian government is extremely nervous about tourists visiting the temples. The only way to go is in a giant bus convey from Aswan, escorted and guarded by armed guards.

Despite the cost and inconvenience, a visit is definitely worthwhile. As in many other touristic destinations, taking pictures is prohibited, so all I have are pictures from the outside.
