With nothing to do on Tuesday, I took a day trip to the historic city of Melaka. My guidebook had warned me that Tuesday was the worst day to go there, since many of the museums are shops are closed. But I had no choice, and plenty of stuff was still listed as open. As it turned out, pretty much nothing I wanted to see was closed.

I made it to the city around noon, and quickly hit all the tourist spots in the downtown region: Christ Church, Stadthuy, A Famosa, Kampong Kling Mosque, and St. Paul's Church. After about two hours in the heat, I needed a break. The humidity is really stifling. I can't imagine what summer is like here. I ate lunch in a nice air conditioned mall, where I also bought a couple of dollars worth of souvenirs.

At 2:30 or so, I took off again, this time for the Portuguese settlement and the Dutch fort, located on the outskirts of town. The Portuguese settlement is a waste of time--nothing worth seeing, but the Dutch fort was interesting. I meandered back into town, seeing a few more sites on the Jonker Walk and Heritage trail, like the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia, dating back to the 1600s. I finished the day by relaxing with a trip to the revolving tower and a river cruise, before catching a 7:30 bus back to Johor Bahru.
