My grand tour of Oceania actually begins in San Francisco, where I attended the second California Open over Halloween weekend. I had an excellent time (despite my mediocre tournament performance), managing to squeeze in a lot of sightseeing in only a couple partial days.

Seatmate on the LAX-SFO flight was genuinely crazy. He must have looked at his watch every ten seconds in a completely exaggerated motion. Lots of other bizarre tics as well, Thankfully, he kept entirely to himself and didn't bug me at all.

The Sheraton hotel somehow forgot to add my name to my roommate's reservation, so I couldn't check in until he arrived about six hours later.

I had a late Indian food lunch with a bunch of other Scrabblers on Monday afternoon before heading to the airport for my 7pm flight to Los Angeles. It was originally a direct SFO-SYD flight, but when Qantas cut back on their schedule, they canceled this flight and instead stuck me on a quickie American Airlines flight from SFO-LAX. This was the first of many airline issues on this trip.

The second issue arose at the airport, where I saw the flight was delayed by about 2 hours, which would give me no time to connect in LAX, especially since I'd have to change terminals.

However, because virtually everyone on the flight was continuing on to Sydney with me, Qantas shepherded us through LAX, ushering us to their inter-terminal bus so we wouldn't have to do the security dance again, allowing us to make it to the plane on time.

Actual flight to Sydney was about as un-miserable as a 13 hour trans-Pacific flight in coach could be. Brand new plane, lots of great in-flight entertainment.
