The bus trip to Halong Bay was a few hours, arriving in the early afternoon. We boarded our boat and enjoyed a delicious lunch, followed by a trip to tour the caves. The boat traffic at the caves is just as bad as the city traffic! Boats squeeze and jostle for any available pier space to unload their passengers. We even saw an accident as one boat knocked some decorative molding off of another while trying to dock.

After the caves we did some brief kayaking to work up an appetite for dinner. Sleeping on the boat that night was surprisingly pleasant and comfortable--the shower was even hot, although with virtually no pressure.

The next morning we caught the bus back to Hanoi, where we stopped over for a few hours before catching yet another overnight train to Sapa. Thankfully, the Hanoi to Sapa train is more tourist oriented (i.e., nicer) than the previous two we had taken.
