We came to Te Anau as its the nearest town to Milford Sound, a supposedly magical place on the other side of the mountains. Te Anau is a nice little town, right on the side of a massive crystal clear lake. There's a little bird santuary here too where they are trying to rear the rarest bird in New Zealand and bring it back into the wild.

They use little hand puppets shaped like real birds to feed the chicks and try to give them as little contact with humans as possible. They even scare them with puppets of possums and ferrets so they know to run away if they see one in the wild. Very wierd but it seems to be working.

There wasn't much else to Te Anau for us, although if you were mad for walking (or tramping as they call it here) this marks the start of the Milford Track - a 3 day walk to Milford Sound from the far side of the lake. Its no ordinary walk. It has been voted the best walk in the world over 15 times and there is a waiting list of more than six months to do it. We just got the bus to the sound instead.
