We got into Datong and found our hotel, conveniently located right next to the station, and were greeted by this overly eager consierge who had some English and was dying to use it. In fact he wouldn't shut up for ages. He brought us to our room and we had to practically throw him out and slam the door to get rid of him. Actually a lot of people over here like to try to talk to you if they have English. They are really proud to be able to do it. In fact they try to talk to you even when they havn't a word of English, which can be a challenge because they don't seem to understand that you haven't a clue what they are saying. They even write shit down in chinese thinking you'd understand that better.
Anyway, we were in Datong to see the Hanging Temples (where we had another "appreciate the fact you're alive" bus journey) and the Yungang Caves, both of which you've probably never heard of so I won't go into too much detail. You can just look at the photos and make your own judgements. I thought they were great, but then I think everything is great.
