Dalai Lamas Home
Trip Start Mar 06, 2005
54Trip End ??? ??, 2006
The Home of the DL and yes he was home when we called!
We were subjected to quite a high level of security (metal detectors and removal of cameras, a quick frisking etc but the 'temple' was thronged with people listening to the amplified voice of the DL broadcast to a large crowd of devotees and visitors. He was reading from scriptures and explaining their meaning (apparently).
We were very pleased to have heard him (we couldnt see him and we were not allowed any closer (stopped by the unbiquitous body guards).
The town itself is a sprawling narrow street 'village' in the hills with every other building being a Budhist trinket / souvenir shop, guest house / hotel or similar. During our brief stay (one night) the place was absolutely packed with maroon robed monks...because of the readings he planned to make over the next few days and his impending birthday!
A nice place to visit because it's the home of the exiled DL but it really has little else to commend it...more of a stop-off rather than a destination! Unless- of course you are a devout Budhist its not dificult to see why they call it 'Little Tibet'.
