Konnichi wa! Today was a very full day of finding 6 baby rats in the cucumber rows, turning over soil for seeds of mibuna and chikansei, and making rhubarb jam! I was very excited to make this jam because ARI sells it at bazaars and festivals around this area and also in Tokyo. I was planning on buying some, now I get to send home some that I made! I LOVE strawberry rhubarb pie, but have never eaten rhubarb by itself. IWith Yoshie, Ao, and Maiko we made 84 jars of rhubarb, and 19 blueberry. I stirred that huge pot for over an hour! Patience is a virtue as someone great said... and they were right! We cleaned afterwards by licking spoons and such- as is always necessary! :)
Sunday was the best day though so far... we did not have to do ANY work. Although work has always been a fun adventure, relaxing here was like flying a kite, or something. I was the most at peace I've ever been. Sleeping in until 1pm, eating homemeade pizza and cookies for lunch and reading 'A New Earth' by Eckhart Tolle for a few hours and then a delicious dinner from the farm where's my bike?
where's my bike?
! I actually did work on sunday by helping with dinner. I thought that I would just cut vegetables or put chopsticks on the tables. To my surprise, the cook asked me to make one of the two main dishes for 50+ people! ahh. I was totally caught off guard! but quickly recalled one of my favorite recipes from PCC deli. I grilled eggplant and onions and mixed with a yogurt sauce with basil, chili, garam masala powder, s&pep, and oregano. Watch out college housemates --I'm going to be making some tasty dishes when I move into Abbott St! haha. My day of heaven didn't stop there... I watched a movie! "Howl's Moving Castle" is a very well done animation movie and very famous in Japan. (It is done by the same people as Totoro!)
I'm also including in this entry some pictures of night time bike adventures with the younger volunteers (well, my age-ish) We have a lot of fun trying to understand eachother- between us we speak 4 different languages! I will miss them a ton! Some i have talked to about travelling with in other countries. Most have already travelled to 8-10 different countries in their 21-24 years! This is sad contrasted to my meager list of 3...
Lastly, there are some pictures I took today while out in the field just because I was feeling artsy. Want to look impressive, haha
Keep checking up and I will write more! Promise!
Hugs to you all,
Meaghan
