The reason for going to Waitomo was the glow worm caves. We went on a tour with a company called Spellbound. They took us by minibus to some caves a little way outside of Waitomo. We were equipped with hard hats and torches, and set off on foot into the caves.
In the first cave we went into the tour group was loaded into a raft and our guide pulled us into the pitch black cave by ropes that were set up in the cave. The further we went in, the more and more we saw of the glow worms. We learnt that they are not actually worms but maggots of a certain kind of fly
When we returned to the start point of the rafting part we were amazed how much our eyes had adjusted to the darkness. At the start we couldn't see a thing but at the end we could see each other quite clearly.
Back outside we had a short walk to the next cave. Here there were not so many glow worms but our guide was telling us all about the caves and how they were formed. There were a few glimpses out into the open air within it and we saw lots of animal remains from where they had fallen in and died.
In the village later on we had a look around the Caves Museum before chilling out in the hostel and going for a bounce on the trampoline and a swim. That night we drove to a small town north of Waitomo called Otorohanga for dinner in the only restaurant open there.
The next day we continued our journey north to Hamilton for one night.
