The First Thai Capital

Sukhothai is on the way south towards Bangkok so we used the city as a stop on the way down to Kanchanaburi. On arrival from Chiang Mai Mark went to get the bags from the hold and in trying to avoid a big puddle, Theresa slipped in her flip flops, falling backwards into a load of mud and who knows what else in full view of the bus we just got off and the bus station waiting area.
Mark was slow to help, mainly because he had to shift both bags out of the way so that another bus could stop in the bay Theresa had slipped in. For the next few minutes Theresa tried to clean herself up with everyone watching before going to change her trousers at the toilets. On emerging from the toilets she slipped over again but managed to stop herself falling to the floor.
Eventually we made it to a guest house and got some dinner before bed. The next day we took the local bus to Sukhothai National Park, the 358th Unesco World Heritage Site. This was the original capital city of Thailand, comprising of many Hindu and Buddhist temples over a wide site. It was on a much smaller scale than Angkor Wat in Cambodia and had we not been there before we would probably have been overwhelmed by this site. Having ridden our bikes around the old city we took the bus back to look around the new city, which can best be described as a dump! The rest of the evening was spent relaxing, including a swim in the guest house pool before a day of travelling down to Kanchanaburi.
