Exploring Phnom Penh

We have been in Phnom Penh since yesterday afternoon and when we got off the bus after a six hour trip along the smooth (yeah right!) road, there was a sea of tuk tuk drivers clawing at us, however in the crowd was a tuktuk driver holding a sign up with Theresa's name on it. (This had been phoned through to him by the manager of the bus company).
He took us to a budget hotel that was $20 a night (a little over our budget) but as we had not booked anywhere and Mark was busting for the toilet we decided to stop there for one night. So once Mark had been for a pee we hunted out a guest house with as good a room for around half the price. It is a family run guesthouse, and the mum (who calls herself the MD) is very friendly and has a cafe, internet and little snack area downstairs, excellent!
We arranged with the same tuktuk driver to take us out today and he took us around a few sights in the capital. First we headed to the killing fields of Choeng Ek where Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge would take their victims to be executed and buried. It was horrific and eerie walking round with the sound of children playing at the local school in the background.
Most of the museums in Phnom Penh close between 11am and 2pm so we went to another terrible place, S21. This was the prison where the Khmer Rouge tortured and interrogated. Again, this was very sad and strangely eerie considering before being used as a prison, the site was a high school.
After stopping off for lunch along the river, our driver took us to the Royal Palace. This is where the Silver Pagoda is also housed. This was very beautiful, and along the same lines of the thai palace.
Tomorrow we are goingto get our ticket to Sihanoukville and have a lazy day. The heat is getting to us a bit! On Friday we will head to Sihanoukville where apparently there are amazing beaches. Can't wait!!
Love, Mark and Theresa xx
