Where I stayed
An early morning and I'm up, mainly to see the difference between yesterday’s sunset with the sunrise on the canyon. Its not a completely clear sky, there are clouds in the east, so the light is diffused for a big chunk of the morning. I’d like to have some harsher shadows too contrast some of the lighter sandstone but I’m just happy it’s not raining.
Start to load the camera gear and notice that the transmission line to the radiator is leaking a lot more than the past few days. I would like to head down to New Mexico and visit the lightning field but there is a tropical storm hanging of the Texas coast which could make it really messy. Rather than risk any damage to the car (or myself) I make the tough decision to head back
Back at camp it’s a quick pack and a sit down with the atlas. Quickest and probably the safest direction would be to take the major interstates just in case the car situation decides to worsen. Should take about two and a half days to get back (10-12 hours a day) as long as the weather cooperates.
On the way to the interstate there are still some great areas outside the canyons, wish I had more time to explore but thankful to at least see them.
I wind up stopping in Goodland, Kansas the first night followed by a stop in Marion, IL the next night. Weather is great so I calculate that’s its just about 5 hours to Marietta and home sweet home.
