Mt. Ranier, Washington To Olympic National Park

I’m looking at my AAA Trip Tix and comparing the route to the road atlas and I think about an hour can be shaved off.  Since I can save some time I can be a little more selective on the campsite.

Spoke to soon about the time, it looks like Washington along with the rest of the nation is fixing its infrastructure.  I arrive a little before noon at the park’s information station and work with the ranger to select the best campground.  Want to be near the coast but still take advantage of the Ho rainforest.  We choose the Mora campground  on Rialto beach, just down the road from LaPush which should sound familiar to you Twilight fans.

The drive takes a about 90 minutes but is well worth it.  After the tent is set I head on down to the beach to survey the landscape.  Weather starts out a little overcast but quickly changes with the help of a strong, cool Pacific wind coming off the water.  The beach is loaded with a mixture of giant downed trees, variety of small rocks that have been smoothed down by the ocean and some native birds.

Time for a short break, so I pull in to eat at this little place called the Three Rivers Café in Forks, Washington.  The big claim to fame is that they are on the border of LaPush, which in the Twilight books is the only place the vampires cannot enter.  Their promotions are food based and include an excellent Vampire milkshake and as though on cue, a scheduled tour came through while I was enjoying my lunch.

Later that evening I went back to beach to take a few shots at sunset.

Next, time for Jiffy Pop!

It's funny but Three River's since the Twilight Mania started just renamed all their old food items Twilight themed names. I preferred it much more when things weren't so Twilight crazy over there. But Forks and those living around that area really needed the money ever since the logging industry went down hill.

I've been going to Mora every 4th of July since I was 6 or 7. It's the best place to go camping. It's in the middle of all the places you'd want to go in the National Park. The best spots are on the river. But if you plan to be there on a weekend or for a holiday get there early in the day if you want the river spots. We always get our spots on a Sunday before 4th of July and stay a week or longer. La Push is the best place for 4th of July fireworks and Quileute Day's fireworks.
