Pascagoula to Baton Rouge

Got up early to get a jump on the sunrise and because I really couldn’t get to sleep thanks to the raccoon incident the night before.

Headed down to the banks of the Pascagoula (Singing River), which according to legend, got its name from when the Pascagoula Indians walked hand in hand into the river to take their lives rather than live with the hostile Biloxi Indians in the area.  I admire their dedication to a plan but now they missed out on all that casino money.

Speaking of casinos, Biloxi and Gulfport are on the way along US 90 W and I decided to stop, not to gamble but to witness the shrimp boats already coming in with the morning catches.  Eager locals and chefs line up to inspect product and negotiate price.

Scars from hurricane Katrina will be around for a long time and a lot of property is for sale but there are a those who are rebuilding.  One in particular is Waffle House.  I must have counted 5 of them within a 10 mile span.  Plus, Walmart is building a super center right across from the beach, now you can get your inflatables and beer all in one place.

Finally made it to the KOA campgrounds in Denham Springs, LA, just down the road from Baton Rouge.  Not a scenic as my previous night but the ground is softer and Carol at the front desk promised no raccoons but there might be a drunk or two that wanders through from the bar down the road.  Later that day, I headed to Baton Rouge for the first day of competition at the Pennington Balloon Championships.  Lots to do for the kids but unfortunately, a storm north of the event prevented the gondolas from actually ascending.  Instead, they inflated the balloons  for what they call a “glow” session.    They do an all burn, which is just what it sounds like and then perform a “twinkle” light where they all fire randomly.

After that I headed back to the tent for an early night since I wanted to be up the next morning for the competition.

I'd worry more about the guys in the white tent
Forget the racoons, I'd be more worried that the local zealots might get a hold of you! Safe trip, man.
