So we left Amarillo (for those of you who are fellow coffee fiends, yes we hit starbucks on the way out), and headed for Albuquerque, NM (only a short 4 hours and 30 minutes)! P.S. if the dude from the Starbucks on some road in Amarillo is reading this, it is NOT only about 3 hours to Albuquerque.... you should not get a girls hopes up like that... ;)
So we got on I-40 AGAIN and drove our way out of TX and into New Mexico (The land of enchantment, I might add). Along the way we saw some pretty cool fields of wind turbines and some pretty sweet herds of cows.... Also saw a ridiculous chair made of cow pieces and crazy travel stories on a bathroom stall......
Once in New Mexico the scenery changed (Thank God! no more plains and prairies!) to plateaus, and well... that's pretty much it.
We stayed on I-40 for the remainder of the trip only exiting for gas and bathroom breaks..... not a good combo... hahaha. Oh you know I mean gasoline... for the car... sillies.
Most notable bathroom break, however, was on the old historic Route 66. We stopped at an old gas station (the only one for miles and miles) whose bathrooms were slightly more modern outhouses... yeah, that's right. So one at a time we go in to pee only to find filth and a family of flies.... let's just say that was the most creative bathroom break I've ever taken. AND to top it all off....... we had to pay a quarter to "use the facilities." RIDICULOUS!! Apparently in that neck of the woods, it's still very much the olden days.
So what seemed like an eternity later we finally started driving through the Sandia Mountains and approached Albuquerque. Absolutely a sight to see...
At that point, I'm pretty sure our bodies (between yesterday and todays drives) had completely conformed to the shape of my car seats and we were beyond ready to get out of the car. We checked into our hotel (which was totally sketch, so we checked out and found a new one to check into....hahaha), and hung out in the hot tub before going to pick my mom up at the airport.
After picking up my mom, we met Jenny's friend Brian and went to Little Anitas for some authentic New Mexican food. Delicious! After Brian took us on a little tour of Old Town Albuquerque and Downtown Albuquerque. (P.S. we promised Brian we'd put in a good plug for Albuquerque.....SO..... GO TO ALBUQUERQUE! It's awesome!! (especially if you're hanging out with Brian)).
Alright kids, bedtime.
Tomorrow we're taking a day off and taking a day trip to Santa Fe... we'll let you know how it goes.
Oh p.s. total hitchhiker count for I-40: Three (two dudes and a girl!)
p.p.s. Yesterdays quote of the day winner: Jenny's ode to driving like a retard.... Gotta love her.
